Happy Birthday Ilaiyaraja

Ilaiyaraja is an Indian film instrumentalist, conductor, singer, and songwriter who works in the South Indian cinema but predominantly in Tamil since the late 1970s. Born on 2nd June 1943 in Pannaipuram, a little hamlet at the foot of the Western Ghats in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu State, South India.
Ilaiyaraaja is the first Asian composer to score a symphony for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He was one of the early Indian film composers to use Western classical music harmonies and string arrangements in Indian film music. He is a gold medalist from Trinity College of Music, London and his works are mainly in Tamil and Telugu. Ilayaraja entered the Tamil film industry and composed his first Tamil music in 1976 for the movie “Annakili”
Since then, he has written music for nearly 1000 films, which must be an international record. With his deft improvisations and constant experiments, he has composed more than 6000 songs for the films.
Ilaiyaraaja’s composition Rakkama Kaiya Thattu from the movie “Thalapathi”(1991) was amongst the songs listed in a BBC World Top Ten music poll. He has also worked with international bands as well as given music score for the miss world 1996, Bangalore. Apart from many titles, he has won the National awards and State awards many times.
