Sometimes, the most fascinating genre of all is an emotional family drama and Thanga Magan starring Dhanush, Samantha and Amy Jackson in lead roles turns out to be more of this sort. The film is directed by Velraj, who earlier made ‘Velai Illa Pattadhaari’ and this film features KS Ravikumar, Radhika Sarathkumar, Ethir Neechal Satish, Jayaprakash, MS Bhaskar and few others in important roles. Anirudh has composed music for this film, produced by Gopuram Films.
The film is about Tamizh (Dhanush) who has been so much connected to his family members and friends. His father KS Ravikumar works at Income Tax office and Radhika Sarathkumar takes care of him unconditionally. His close friend (Ethir Neechal Satish) and cousin Aravind means everything to him. He falls in love with a beautiful girl Hema (Amy Jackson) and after a year, they have a break up. She ends up eventually marrying Dhanush’s cousin Aravind and later Dhanush gets married to Samantha after his father gets him job at same IT Department. After few days of happiness in the family, they are blown out of shock, when KS Ravikumar commits suicide and allegations that he missed a high profile file take away the job of Dhanush as well. Now he sets out to find out the actual reason behind the death of his father.
The first 40 minutes of the film have lots of fun filled moments, where teenagers would surely love it. The romantic scenes of Dhanush and Amy, the combination with Satish comedy are good. The latter portion of after-married life with Dhanush and Samantha is yet another beautiful depiction. Dhanush has done a beautiful job with his role as teenager and married man is good. Samantha looks homely and her performance is commendable indeed. Amy Jackson looks gorgeous and has been delineated at right shade. Ethir Neechal Satish is good with his humor. KS Ravikumar and Radhika Sarath Kumar steal the show. Jayaprakash and MS Bhaskar have been wasted. The one in negative role is just okay.
Anirudh musical score is a different attempt and the songs are splendid.
On the whole, Thanga Magan is a decent family entertainer that has lots of emotions.
Verdict: Emotional family drama.
